Dear Friends of the Hakjang Welfare Centre!
My sincerest best wishes on the occasion of your 10th. Anniversary.
I have very happy and special memories of my visit to your centre in September 2000. I also have many photographs that I took of my visit so that I can remind myself of the amazing work that you are doing to serve the needs of your community. I wish to thank and congratulate Director Heung-Sook Oh for her generosity during my visit to you.
Thank you also for this opportunity to join with you in celebration.
Yes, we do need to celebrate 10 years of wonderful work and to thank the staff and volunteers who have given so much of their time, commitment and dedication to make your centre what it is today.
Talking about volunteers is a subject very close to my heart and I am always heartened by the amount of time and energy that people like yourselves give to LifeLine projects. Volunteers in our many member countries around the world as well as all the centres around Korea give of their time so unselfishly in order to provide support for people in crisis or need.
In the world today where so many only consider 'I' and 'Me' I am often asked if volunteers are perhaps a dying breed? My answer to that is NO.
We have approximately 30 000 LifeLine volunteers around the world who ensure that counselling services and community projects like your own continue to support those in need. Without volunteers our service and our organisation would not exist.
The United Nations have warned that if we continue offering our children an education based on financial and political superiority, as we do today, then our world can not survive. We need to educate our children to consider
'community' and the needs of others as well as ourselves. That is what your centre is doing and I commend you for that.
Why do people want to volunteer? Well I have identified 3 main reasons,
from my experience with LifeLine Centres. They are:
1. A wish to serve their community - that is they recognise that there are
people in the community who are less fortunate than themselves and in
gratitude for what they have they will find an organisation that requires
volunteers and offers a service that also fulfills their desire to give.
2. To make the training part of their career development - this is also important because we also know from experience that you can not give to others when you do not have yourself. So it is imporatant to realise that in volunteering and being part of the training and management of volunteers you also gain experience that can be of great value in other areas of your life.
3. A need to share the wisdom gained through difficult experiences that volunteers have had in their own lives - nobody can understand a person in crisis better than someone who has had a similar experience themselves. With training they have learnt to work constructively with their difficulties and this experience is worth so much when helping others.
On the occasion of your 10th. birthday it is also a special time to look back and consider all those who have given their time in the past to developing your centre and also all those who you have helped through the services you offer, I am sure that they look back in their lives and are grateful for what you have given them.
Celebrate with Joy and Thanksgiving and may Your Work be Blessed for Many Years to come.
I am not able to be with you in person but my thougts and good wishes are with you ALL. On behalf of all the LifeLine Centres around the world and the LifeLine International Board, I wish you well.
